1893: Esther Cleveland was born. She was the daughter of Grover and Frances Cleveland. Grover Cleveland married Frances in 1886 during his first term of office but was not reelected for a second term in 1888. But he then ran again and was elected in 1892, the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms of office. People took keen interest in the birth of Esther at the mansion in 1893, and of Marion in 1895. When the family left the White House, Mrs. Cleveland had become one of the most popular women ever to serve as hostess for the nation. Grover Cleveland was 27 years older than Frances. He died in 1908.

1776: The Continental Congress formally approved the "United States of America" as the name for the country that had just declared independence from England in July.

1087: William the Conqueror, King of England and Duke of Normandy who was victorious in the Battle of Hastings (the Norman Conquest), died in France.
